How to Estimate Cut and Fill for Field Leveling — Free (Before You Get a Bid)

Field leveling is priced by the dirt: the more cubic yards a scraper has to move, the more the job costs. Yet most growers walk into that conversation knowing only that the field "runs wet in the corner" — with no idea whether they're looking at a light touch-up or a serious earthmoving bill. Here's how to get a rough cut-and-fill number for free, so the first estimate you hear isn't the first number you've ever seen.

What "cut and fill" actually means

Leveling a field means dragging soil from the high spots (cut) into the low spots (fill) until the surface hits a target grade. A balanced design picks that target plane so the cut volume roughly equals the fill volume — the dirt taken off the highs is exactly what the lows need, and nothing gets hauled on or off the field. That balanced volume, in cubic yards, is the single number that drives most of the cost, because custom leveling work is commonly billed by the yard moved or by the hour it takes to move it.

The same number tells you whether leveling is worth it at all. A field that needs a few hundred yards nudged around is a maintenance pass. A field that needs tens of thousands of yards is a capital project — one you'd want to weigh against tile, a different crop, or simply farming around the low spot.

Why the shape of the ground matters first

Free ways to get a first number

1. Read the water you already have

After a hard rain or a heavy irrigation set, walk or drive the field and note where water stands, how big each pool is, and roughly how deep. Standing water is a free elevation survey — every pond marks a depression, and its depth is fill your leveling job will need. Photograph the pools with something for scale and mark them on a map you'll still have next season.

2. Pull the public elevation data

Much of the U.S. is covered by public elevation data — in many areas lidar-derived and detailed enough to show individual field undulations. County GIS viewers often serve contours or hillshade built from it, and full GIS packages like QGIS can compute real cut/fill volumes from a downloaded elevation model. The catch: the viewers are 2D and don't know where your field boundary is, and the do-it-yourself GIS route is a genuine skill investment — most growers stall out at the download step.

3. Do a simple grid survey

The traditional route: a laser level or RTK receiver and a grid of shots across the field (every 50–100 feet is the classic pattern). It's the most accurate free-ish option if you already own the equipment, and it's exactly what a leveling contractor will do before quoting — which is also the catch. The contractor's survey happens after you've called them, and their number arrives attached to their bid.

4. Ask the ground's history

Old leveling jobs, prior owners' tile maps, FSA and appraisal paperwork — fields that have been leveled before often have a paper trail that tells you what was done and what it took. It won't give you a current number, but it tells you whether the ground has been worked toward grade before or never touched.

The order of operations

Get your own number first. Run the terrain estimate, check it against where water actually stands, and dig up whatever leveling history the field has. Then call the contractor — with a map, a rough yardage, and a sense of whether you're negotiating a touch-up or a project. The survey they run will supersede your estimate, and it should. But the grower who walks in with a first-pass number reads the bid very differently from the one who walks in with a wet corner and a hope.
