How to Map Your Farm in 3D for Free (Tools That Actually Work)
A farm map that's flat is missing the thing that runs your ground: terrain. Slope decides where water goes, where cold air settles, which corner never dries out, and where the sprayer bogs. There are genuinely free ways to get your fields onto a real 3D map — some better than others depending on what you need. Here's an honest tour of the options, what each one does well, and where each one runs out.
Why a 3D map instead of a flat one
Most "farm maps" are a boundary drawn on a flat aerial photo. Useful — but the photo hides elevation, and elevation is the variable behind half the problems you manage:
- Water. Low spots pond, high spots shed. On a flat photo they look identical; on terrain they're obvious.
- Cold air. Frost drains downhill like water. Pockets and thermal belts follow the shape of the ground, not the property line.
- Work planning. Where a pivot fits, which direction beds should run, where a tile line has fall — all terrain questions.
- Explaining the ground to someone else. A landlord, a lender, a new hire — everyone reads a 3D view instantly. Contour lines, not so much.
The free options, honestly compared
Google Earth
The default answer, and a good one for looking around: real global imagery draped on real terrain, at no cost. Where it runs out for farm work: measurements are one-off (draw a polygon, read the area, and it lives in that KML and nowhere useful), there's no concept of a field with records attached — no acreage table, no crop, no season, no yield history — and the desktop version where the real tools live is a different app from the web and mobile versions. Great for a look; thin as a system of record.
Your county's GIS parcel viewer
Most U.S. counties run a free web viewer with parcel lines, ownership, and sometimes contours or LiDAR-derived hillshade. Excellent for legal boundaries and looking up who owns what. But parcels aren't fields — one parcel can hold six fields, and one field can straddle three parcels — the viewers are almost always 2D, and you can't save your own field boundaries into someone else's county website. Reference, not a tool you work in.
QGIS (free desktop GIS)
The professional's answer, and genuinely free. QGIS will do anything — import any format, drape imagery over elevation models, compute areas, run terrain analysis. The cost is time: it's a full GIS package with a real learning curve, you assemble your own elevation data and imagery layers, and the built-in 3D view takes real setup and patience to get right. If you already speak GIS, it's superb. If you wanted a map of your farm this afternoon, it's a winter project.
Farm-management platform free tiers
Several commercial ag platforms offer a free tier or trial. Read the ceiling before you invest the setup time: the free level typically caps fields or acres hard, holds back exports, and exists to move you to a monthly subscription — which is fair, but it means the "free" map you build is a down payment. Also, most are flat maps with imagery layers, not 3D terrain.
Paper, plat books, and the FSA map
Still everywhere, still useful — your FSA farm map is the acreage baseline half the industry settles on. But it's a static 2D snapshot: no terrain, no updates when you re-draw a field, and it lives in a drawer.
What to look for in a free farm mapping tool
- Real terrain, not just imagery. The 3D has to come from actual elevation data, or it's decoration.
- Your boundaries, saved. Draw a field once, keep it, and get its acreage — the standard map acre, measured from the boundary you draw.
