How to Open a Shapefile or KML of Your Farm — Free (No GIS Software Needed)
Sooner or later, somebody emails you your own farm. A crop consultant sends field boundaries as a zipped shapefile. The insurance agent's mapping service exports a KML. A tile contractor hands over as-builts, or the previous owner's files turn up on a thumb drive. You double-click the file — and nothing on your computer knows what to do with it. Here's what those files actually are, and the free ways to open them without buying or learning GIS software.
What you were actually sent
Farm boundary files come in a handful of formats, and knowing which one you're holding is most of the battle:
- Shapefile — the old workhorse of the GIS world, and the most confusing to receive, because a "shapefile" is really a set of files that travel together: at minimum a
.shp(the shapes), a.dbf(the attribute table — names, acres), and usually a.prj(the coordinate system). They're commonly delivered zipped. If someone sent you a lone.shpwith no sidecars, ask them to re-send the whole zip. - KML / KMZ — Google Earth's format (KMZ is just a zipped KML). If your file came from anything consumer-facing, it's probably one of these.
- GeoJSON — a newer, web-native format; a single
.json/.geojsontext file. Common from web mapping tools and software exports.
None of these open in Word, Excel, or a photo viewer — which is why the double-click goes nowhere. You need something that speaks the format.
Free ways to open it
1. Google Earth — best for KML and KMZ
KML and KMZ open directly in Google Earth — the web version handles most files, and the free desktop Google Earth Pro also imports shapefiles (File → Import). You'll see your boundaries on aerial imagery and can click features to read their attributes. The limits: it's a viewer, not a farm tool — no acreage roll-ups by field, no records attached to each boundary, and shapefile import on the desktop app can be picky about coordinate systems.
2. QGIS — opens everything, if you'll climb the hill
QGIS is free, professional-grade GIS that opens every format on this list plus dozens more, reprojects between coordinate systems, and can fix broken files. If you'll do this often — or you want to edit the data, not just see it — it's the real answer. The honest catch: it's a full GIS package with a genuine learning curve, and "just open the file" turns into an afternoon the first time.
3. Browser-based viewers — quick look, no install
Free in-browser tools can give you a fast look: mapshaper.org opens zipped shapefiles and GeoJSON right in the browser (and converts between formats), and geojson.io renders GeoJSON on a map. Handy for a sanity check — is this even my farm? — but they're inspection tools: plain basemaps or none at all, and nothing is saved or organized for next season.
4. Ask the sender for a different format
Unglamorous but effective: whoever exported the file can almost always export it again as KML or GeoJSON in WGS84 (plain GPS latitude/longitude — the coordinate system almost everything understands). If a file won't open anywhere, a re-export in a friendlier format is usually faster than fighting the original.

Two honest limits worth knowing up front. First, coordinate systems: the mapper handles WGS84, UTM, and Web-Mercator files. If your shapefile is in a State Plane or other regional coordinate system, the mapper will name the coordinate system and decline the import rather than draw your fields in the wrong place — ask the sender for a WGS84 or KML export instead. Second, an imported boundary is only as good as whoever drew it: the acreage is a map measurement from that boundary, not a legal survey, and a boundary digitized loosely stays loose after import.
Imports are also forgiving of messy files — one broken feature in a file gets skipped instead of failing the whole import. Once your fields are in, they're not trapped: the mapper exports your fields and records back out as CSV and GeoJSON. It's free while in beta — nothing locked today.
Which route to take
For a one-time peek at a KML, Google Earth is fine. For heavy lifting — editing data, fixing coordinate systems, merging sources — learn QGIS. But if the point of the file is that these are your fields and you want them on real terrain with acreage, notes, and records attached — import it into a tool built to keep them, and stop re-opening the email attachment every time a question comes up.
