How Many Acres Does a Center Pivot Water? (Measure the Circle, Not the Quarter)
Every pivot quarter carries two acre numbers: the 160 the deed talks about and the circle the machine actually waters — and on a standard quarter-mile pivot there's about 34 acres of daylight between them. Rent negotiations, input orders, and yield math all quietly assume you know which number you're using. Most of the time, somebody in the conversation doesn't.
The circle math: 160 deeded, about 126 watered
A quarter section is a half-mile square — 160 acres. A pivot built to cover it runs a lateral about a quarter mile long, so the wetted circle has a radius of roughly 1,320 feet. Area of that circle: π × 1,320² ≈ 5.47 million square feet. An acre is 43,560 square feet, so the circle comes out to a shade under 126 acres.
That leaves about 34 acres in the four corners — call it 8½ per corner, or more than a fifth of the deeded ground the circle never touches. An end gun buys a few acres back in lobes where pressure lets it throw; a corner-arm machine swings out and chases most of the rest; a shorter machine on a tight quarter waters meaningfully less. Every one of those changes moves the number — which is the point. The book answer is a starting guess, not your field.
Why the book number still isn't your number
Full circles are the tidy case. Walk any river road and you'll see the rest: part-circle pivots wiping back and forth against a road, a house, a ditch, or a property line — watering two-thirds of a circle, minus the pond. Machines pulled up a tower short of the fence. A wet corner nobody planted. Two machines splitting a half section with a seam of dryland between them. No table of standard pivot sizes covers "about 63% of a circle, minus the wash."
The good news is that the machine paints its own footprint. Season after season, the wetted circle shows up in aerial imagery as plainly as anything in agriculture ever shows up: the green disc, the crop edge where the water stops, the outer wheel track worn into the ground. You don't need to derive your acres from the machine's spec sheet — you can trace the edge the water actually reaches and measure that. Where the missing 34 acres cost money
Rent is the loud one. Irrigated ground and dryland corners rent at very different rates, and a lease that prices "the quarter" at the irrigated rate is paying irrigated money for 34 dryland acres. Put hypothetical numbers on it: call irrigated rent $250 an acre and the corners worth $50. All 160 at the irrigated rate is $40,000; 126 wetted acres plus 34 corner acres prices out at $33,200. That's a $6,800-a-year difference on one quarter, riding entirely on which acre number the handshake used. The rates in your county will differ — the arithmetic won't.
Yield math is the quiet one. Divide the fall's bushels by the deeded 160 and your irrigated yield reads about 21% worse than the circle actually ran — which muddies every comparison you try to make against another field, another year, or a neighbor's number quoted on wetted acres. Same harvest, same dirt, two different stories, all down to the denominator (the yield-tracking guide is built around getting that denominator honest).
And anything applied through the machine — fertilizer, chemicals, the water itself — is going on the wetted acres, not the deeded ones. Order and budget against 160 and the corners quietly absorb the difference in the paperwork, whether or not they ever saw a pass.

What the map can't tell you
- Its acres are the standard map acre, measured from the boundary you trace — the right number for rent conversations and per-acre math, never a survey or a boundary determination. If the conversation is about where the line actually runs, that's different homework (the property-lines guide covers what free records can and can't settle).
- It won't design or run your irrigation. No flow rates, no application depths, no schedules — the machine's design sheet, your well, and your own gauges own all of that. The mapper measures the ground; it doesn't talk to the pivot.
- Imagery is a snapshot. The photo caught one day of one season — an end-gun arc that was off, or a part circle parked at one end, isn't the whole footprint. Trace the full crop edge and wheel track you know the machine runs, and re-trace after you change the machine.
- The "160" is nominal too. Deeded quarters run long and short — correction tiers, government lots, "more or less" — so don't be surprised when neither the circle nor the corners add back up to the deed's number (the legal-description guide explains why).
The short version
A quarter-mile pivot waters about 126 of the quarter's 160 acres; the corners hold the rest, and real machines — part circles, end guns, corner arms, short laterals — drift off the book number in every direction. The footprint is already painted in the imagery, so trace it: measure the circle, measure the corners separately, and run your rent, input, and yield math on acres somebody actually measured. It's one boundary per machine, and it settles arguments that have been running since the pivot went up.
