How Many Bales of Hay per Acre? (Track Your Real Number, Field by Field)
Ask how many bales of hay an acre makes and you'll get a different answer from every neighbor — and every one of them can be right, for their ground, their baler, and their year. The honest answer to the question is that anyone quoting you one number without asking what you're baling, where, and on which cutting is guessing. But the question has a real answer for your fields — if you keep the count.
Why there's no one number
A "bale" is not a unit of weight. A small square you throw by hand and a round bale the tractor strains to lift are both "a bale." Rounds alone run from a few hundred pounds to the better part of a ton depending on width, diameter, how tight the baler packs, and how dry the hay went in. The same windrow through two different balers produces two very different counts — so a bales-per-acre figure means nothing until you know what the bale is.
Cuttings aren't equal. In most stands the first cutting is the heaviest of the year; the regrowth cuttings that follow are lighter, and how much lighter depends on water, heat, and how long the stand gets to recover. A season number that doesn't say which cutting — or how many — is half a number.
Stands age. A thick new seeding and a thinning five-year-old stand can sit across the fence from each other and make wildly different hay. Species matters too: alfalfa, grass, and mixes each carry a year differently, and dryland and irrigated ground aren't even playing the same game.
That's why published hay-yield tables give ranges wide enough to drive a swather through. They're fine as a sanity check. They're useless for your rent math, your winter feed plan, or the ad you're about to post selling hay off the field. The number that matters is yours.
Bales ÷ acres — and the acres are usually the soft half
Hay growers reliably know their count. You stacked those bales; nobody has to tell you there were 240 of them. The soft half of the math is almost always the acres underneath the count — the "forty" that actually mows out at 36 after the ditch and the ends, the headlands you turn on instead of cut, the wet strip you swung around in June.
Run the numbers on a field everyone calls 35 acres: 240 rounds is "call it 6.9 bales an acre." Measure the ground you actually mow and it's 31.5 — the same 240 bales are really 7.6 an acre. Same field, same stack, a 10% different answer. Multiply that through a cash-rent negotiation, a fertilizer bill priced per acre, or a standing-hay sale, and the sloppy denominator quietly costs real money.
So before the next cutting, get an honest denominator: draw the boundary you actually mow over aerial imagery and measure it. Track it by field and by cutting — not as one season blur
A whole-farm season total hides everything you'd actually act on: which field slipped, which cutting carried the year, whether the old stand has quietly dropped below the cost of mowing it. The useful record is small and specific — per field, per cutting:
- The date it was cut or baled.
- The cutting number — first, second, third.
- The count and the bale type — 240 rounds means nothing next to last year's 510 small squares unless the record says which is which.
- One honest note — rained on, new seeding, skipped the wet strip, neighbor's heifers got in.
That's four lines a cutting. Two seasons of it and decisions start making themselves: the re-seed goes where the record says the stand is done, the "good field" that's actually average stops getting the benefit of the doubt, and selling standing hay stops being a handshake guess.

What the record can't tell you
- It counts bales; it doesn't weigh them. Moisture and density move bale weight around, so bales never convert cleanly to tons without a scale. If you buy or sell by the ton, the scale ticket is the truth — the count is the field-side record that gets you there.
- Nothing logs itself. This is a ledger you keep, not a sensor bolted to the baler — the record is exactly as good as the count you bring home.
- It won't say why. When a field slips year over year, the reasons live in soil tests, stand counts, and a conversation with your extension agronomist. The record's job is to show you which field to have that conversation about.
- Its acres are the standard map acre, measured from the boundary you draw — a working number for rent, inputs, and yield math, never a survey or a boundary determination.
