How to Track Crop Yield by Field (Without a Spreadsheet Mess)

Most operations know their whole-farm yield. Far fewer can say what each field did — and that's the number that actually drives decisions. Per-field yield history tells you which ground earns its rent, which variety to repeat, and whether that drainage or fertility fix paid for itself. Here's what a useful yield record looks like, why the usual methods fall apart, and a free way to keep one that survives more than a season.

Why per-field beats a whole-farm average

A whole-farm average is a blender: it mixes your best ground and your worst into one number that flatters neither. The decisions that make or lose money live at the field level:

What a useful yield record contains

You don't need much, but you need the same few things every time:

  1. The field — a named boundary with its acreage, so quantity converts to per-acre.
  2. Season and crop (variety too, if you switch) — so year-over-year comparisons compare like with like.
  3. Harvest date and pass — for crops with multiple cuttings or harvest passes, which cut this was.
  4. Quantity in the unit you actually sell in — bushels, bins, cartons, bales, head. Converting everything to one "standard" unit is where spreadsheets start lying.
  5. Estimate vs. actual. Record what you expected before harvest and what you got after. The gap between the two is where the learning is — and over a few seasons it makes your own estimates sharply better.

The usual methods — and where each one bites

Habits that make the record trustworthy

  1. Anchor every number to a drawn boundary. A yield without an acreage is trivia; per-acre is the comparable number, and that means the field's outline has to live with the record.
  2. Pick one unit per crop and keep it. Record in the unit you sell in; let the software do totals per unit instead of hand-converting.
  3. Log the estimate when you make it, then close it out with the actual after harvest. Don't overwrite one with the other — the variance is the point.
  4. Write it down in the field, not at the desk three days later. Whatever you use has to work where the truck is parked, cell signal or not.

The Ranch Mapper is a record you keep, not a sensor — it doesn't pull data from a yield monitor, so the numbers are as good as what you enter (which is exactly why the estimate-then-actual habit matters).
